Multi-speed power tool

A power tool comprising:

• a housing having a pair of mating housing shells that cooperate to define a handle;
• a motor received in the housing, the motor having an output shaft;
• a trigger coupled to the housing and configured to control operation of the motor;
• an output spindle;
• and
• a transmission assembly having a transmission sleeve, a multi-speed reduction gearset, and a speed selector mechanism, the transmission sleeve including a tubular body into which the multi-speed reduction gearset is received, the multi-speed reduction gearset having first and second ring gears that are movable in an axial direction to cause the multi-speed reduction gearset to operate in at least three different speed ratios, the speed selector mechanism comprising first and second wire clips and a rotary selector cam, the first wire clip having a first body, which is received in a first groove formed about the first ring gear, and a plurality of first tabs that extend through the transmission sleeve, the second wire clip having a second body, which is received in a second groove that is disposed about the second ring gear, and a plurality of second tabs that extend through the transmission sleeve, the rotary selector cam being rotatably mounted on the tubular body and defining a pair of first cam slots and a pair of second cam slots, wherein the first tabs are received into the first cam slots and the second tabs are received into the second cam slots, wherein the first and second cam slots are configured to coordinate movement of the first wire clip and the second wire clip, respectively, to correspondingly coordinate movement of the first and second ring gears;
• wherein each end of each first cam slot and each end of each second cam slot is closed.
