Abstract
Fire retardant materials arc provided that contain carbon nanotubes and particles capable of endothermically reacting when exposed to elevated temperatures. The carbon nanotubes may be a buckypaper. Methods also are provided for making a fire retardant material and for improving the fire retardation capabilities of a material.
Claims25
A fire retardant material comprising carbon nanotubes and at least one type of particles capable of endothermically reacting or decomposing when exposed to elevated temperatures.
A fire retardant material comprising at least one type of particles dispersed in a buckypaper, the particles being capable of endothermically reacting or decomposing when exposed to elevated temperatures, wherein the at least one type of particles comprises magnesium dioxide nanoparticles.
A method for making a fire retardant material comprising:
- dispersing carbon nanotubes and at least one type of particles in a solution, the particles being capable of endothermically reacting or decomposing when exposed to elevated temperatures;
- and
- removing the solution through a filter to form a membrane.
A method for improving the fire retardation capability of a material comprising:
- arranging a first buckypaper layer on a first surface of the material;
- arranging on the first buckypaper layer a layer of a first fire retardant material comprising carbon nanotubes and at least one type of particles capable of endothermically reacting or decomposing when exposed to elevated temperatures.
