Abstract
An emergency oxygen supply system for use on aircraft in the event of a loss in cabin pressure is configured for delivering allotments of oxygen and timing the delivery such allotments to each passenger so as maximize the efficiency of the transfer of such oxygen into the passenger's bloodstream. The delivery of each allotment is selected so that the entire allotment is available for inhalation into the region of the lung most efficient at oxygen transfer while the volume of the allotment is selected to substantially coincide with the volume of such region of the lung.
Claims13
An oxygen supply system for delivering oxygen to a plurality of passengers in an aircraft in the event of a loss of cabin pressure, comprising:
- a source of oxygen for supplying a plurality of passengers;
- a corresponding plurality of reservoir bags for the plurality of passengers, respectively, each said plurality of reservoir bags being configured to accumulate a preselected volume of oxygen flowing from said source of oxygen during each respiratory cycle of the plurality of passengers, respectively;
- a corresponding plurality of face masks for the plurality of passengers, respectively, each of said plurality of face masks being configured to force a corresponding one of said plurality of passengers to inhale said preselected volume of oxygen prior to inhaling exclusively cabin air;
- and
- a corresponding plurality of inlet valves connected to said plurality of reservoir bags, respectively, each of said plurality of inlet valves being configured to prevent a flow of oxygen into a corresponding one of said plurality of reservoir bags during an inhalation phase of a corresponding one of the plurality of passengers.
