Abstract
A metal cutting tool has a supporting tool, which has a recess for accommodating a cutting plate. The cutting plate is provided with a clamping trough, which is held in the supporting tool by a clamping claw. The clamping claw is fixed against the supporting tool by a clamping screw. A pressure piece is placed on the clamping claw and its underside facing the cutting plate is provided with a cam, which is in contact with the clamping trough and the clamping claw pulls the pressure piece toward the clamping screw.

- a pressure piece arranged on the clamping claw which comprises a cam on the underside facing the cutting plate which is in contact with the clamping trough, wherein the clamping claw pulls the pressure piece in the direction of the clamping screw, wherein the clamping trough is formed in a circular shape and in the center has a spherical or circular elevation, and wherein the cam comprises a circular ring that is adapted thereto and tightly engages into the clamping trough while surrounding the elevation.
A cutting insert comprising plate having a clamping trough, wherein the clamping trough is formed in a circular shape and in the center has a spherical or circular elevation.
A clamp for use on a chip raising cutting tool comprising a supporting tool having a recess to receive a cutting insert having plate, wherein the cutting plate is provided with a clamping trough, trough which is held in the supporting tool by a clamp which holds the cutting insert in the clamping tool, wherein the clamp is affixed on the supporting tool by a set screw, wherein a pressure piece is disposed on the clamp, wherein the pressure piece clamp and is provided on a side bottom facing the cutting insert tool bit with a cam which is formed in contact with to contact the clamping trough of the cutting insert when in a clamped position, and wherein through, wherein the cam comprises a circular ring for engaging an elevation in the clamping trough of the cutting tool.
A cutting insert for a cutting tool, comprising:
- a top surface terminating at a cutting edge,
- a bottom surface,
- a first clamping trough disposed in the top surface, the first clamping trough spaced from the cutting edge, and
- a first spherical or circular elevation disposed within said clamping trough, the first elevation without a center hole,
- wherein the first elevation has a first elevation surface on a plane lower than that of the top surface.
A combination metal-cutting tool and cutting insert, the cutting insert having a clamping trough and a spherical or circular elevation disposed within the clamping trough, the spherical or circular elevation having an elevation wall and an elevation surface, comprising:
- (a) a supporting tool including a plate seat formed at a forward end thereof and having a bottom and at least one side wall for receiving the cutting insert, the supporting tool including an internally threaded securing bore formed between an inclined surface of the supporting tool and the plate seat;
- (b) a clamp arranged on the supporting tool, the clamp including a lower face with a bearing surface having a shaped lip and a clamp contour portion, the clamp having a threaded aperture formed therethrough;
- (c) a clamp screw inserted into the threaded aperture of the clamp, the set screw having a threaded portion capable of being threaded onto the internally threaded clamp-securing bore of the supporting tool and the threaded aperture of the clamp to bring the clamp into pressing engagement with the cutting insert, and wherein the shaped lip and clamp contour portion engages the elevation wall and the elevation surface of the cutting insert when the clamp is brought into pressing engagement with the cutting insert.
A method of clamping a cutting insert to a metal-cutting tool, the cutting insert having a trough with a spherical or circular elevation disposed therein, the metal-cutting tool including a supporting tool having an insert plate seat formed at a forward end thereof and having a bottom and at least one side wall, the insert plate seat capable of receiving the cutting insert comprising the steps of:
- (a) arranging a clamp on the supporting tool, the clamp including a lower face with a nose portion having a shaped lip portion and a clamp contour portion, the clamp having a threaded aperture formed therethrough;
- (b) inserting a set screw into the aperture of the clamp, the set screw having a threaded portion capable of being threaded into the internally threaded clamp-securing bore of the supporting tool to bring the clamp into pressing engagement with the cutting insert plate, whereby the shaped lip portion and the clamp contour portion of the clamp engages only an elevation wall and an elevation surface of the elevation when the clamp is brought into pressing engagement with the cutting insert.
A combination metal-cutting tool and cutting insert, the cutting insert having a clamping trough and a spherical or circular elevation disposed within the clamping trough, the spherical or circular elevation having an elevation wall and an elevation surface, comprising:
- (a) a supporting tool including a cutting insert plate seat formed at a forward end thereof and having a bottom and at least one side wall for receiving the cutting insert, the supporting tool including a supporting tool bore formed between an inclined surface of the supporting tool and the cutting insert plate seat;
- (b) a clamp arranged on the supporting tool, the clamp including a lower face with a bearing surface having a shaped lip and a clamp contour portion, the clamp having an aperture formed therethrough;
- (c) a clamp screw inserted into the aperture of the clamp, the clamp screw having a threaded portion capable of being threaded onto the bore of the supporting tool and the aperture of the clamp to bring the clamp into engagement with the cutting insert, and wherein the shaped lip and clamp contour portion engages the elevation wall and the elevation surface of the cutting insert when the clamp is brought into pressing engagement with the cutting insert.
A method of clamping a cutting insert to a metal-cutting tool, the cutting insert having a trough with a spherical or circular elevation disposed therein, the metal-cutting tool including a supporting tool having a cutting having an insert plate seat formed at a forward end thereof and having a bottom and at least one side wall, the cutting insert plate seat capable of receiving the cutting insert comprising the steps of:
- (a) arranging a clamp on the supporting tool, the clamp including a lower face with a nose portion having a shaped lip portion and a clamp contour portion, the clamp having an aperture formed therethrough;
- (b) inserting a set screw into the aperture of the clamp, the set screw having a threaded portion capable of being threaded into the clamp-securing bore of the supporting tool to bring the clamp into pressing engagement with the cutting insert plate, whereby the shaped lip portion and the clamp contour portion of the clamp engages only an elevation wall and an elevation surface of the elevation when the clamp is brought into pressing engagement with the cutting insert.
