Method for separating carbohydrate from lignocellulosic solid

A method for at least partially separating components of a lignocellulosic solid feedstock, said method comprising the steps of:

• introducing a lignocellulosic solid feedstock into an counter current extraction apparatus, wherein the counter current extraction apparatus comprises a proximal end and a distal end, and wherein the solid feedstock is introduced at or near the proximal end of the counter current extraction apparatus;
• introducing an extraction fluid at or near the distal end of the apparatus;
• transferring the solid feedstock and the extraction fluid counter currently within the counter current extraction apparatus under conditions sufficient to produce a slurry mixture at or near the distal end of the counter current extraction apparatus, wherein the solid feedstock is transferred from the proximal end to the distal end of the counter current extraction apparatus and the extraction fluid is transferred from the distal end to the proximal end of the countercurrent extraction apparatus;
• removing the slurry mixture from the distal end of the counter current extraction apparatus;
• and
• subjecting the slurry mixture to a reaction condition sufficient to produce at least partially separated components of the lignocellulosic solid feedstock.
