Abstract
The presently disclosed device provides a method and means for ensuring that containers of all types and sizes are vented or purged to atmospheric or environmental conditions upon the interior or exterior of the container reaching a critical temperature pressure, or humidity. Specifically, the presently disclosed invention integrates shape memory polymer (SMP) based, thermally activated fasteners into the venting systems. The result is a venting system that increases munitions safety without compromising the venting effectiveness, structural integrity, or the required bullet/fragment impact resistance requirements of the system.
Claims20
A venting system comprising:
- a. a container of any geometric shape or size;
- b. an opening of any geometric shape or size in said container, surrounded by a first plurality of active material fasteners;
- c. a vent cover of any geometric shape or size such that said vent cover is larger than said opening and capable of covering said opening in said container, wherein said vent cover has at least a first side and a second side, wherein at least said first side has a second plurality of active material fasteners;
- d. attaching said vent cover to said container using said first plurality of active material fasteners and said second plurality of active material fasteners;
- and
- e. a means of sealing said vent cover to said container.
A method for installing a venting mechanism comprising:
- a. providing a venting system comprising:
- i. a container of any geometric shape or size;
- ii. an opening of any geometric shape or size in said container, surrounded by a first plurality of active material fasteners;
- iii. a vent cover of any geometric shape or size capable of covering said opening in said container, wherein said vent cover has at least a first and a second side, wherein at least said first side has a second plurality of active material fasteners
- iv. a means of sealing said vent cover to said container;
- v. attaching said vent cover to said container using said first plurality of active material fasteners and said second plurality of active material fasteners.
- b. activating either said first plurality of active material fasteners or said second plurality of active material fasteners, or both;
- c. placing said vent cover over said opening and engaging said first plurality of active material fasteners with said second plurality of active material fasteners;
- d. installing said means of sealing;
- e. deactivating both said first plurality of active material fasteners and said second plurality of active material fasteners.
