Abstract

A modular, wheeled military vehicle includes a driver module, an engine module, which form a central chassis module (CCM) that is adapted to receive the multipurpose pods on both sides and the rear of the CCM. The CCM and pods are generally V-shaped with slanted, upward extending sides to create multiple blast venting paths to deflect blast energy away from the vehicle occupants. These blast paths could consist of one or more chimneys through the vehicle further reducing occupant exposure to blast energy. For example, the engine module, and front and rear tractive units, can be manufactured with an open framework, allowing significant under vehicle blast venting between the modules and pods, through the engine module, and forward, rearward and to the sides of the vehicle; thereby increasing survivability of the crew. The pods can be designed to rotate and/or be frangible to increase the blast-venting path through the vehicle.

Dependent claims

A modular wheeled vehicle suitable for military use, law enforcement and commercial use, which comprises:

(a) a central chassis module (“CCM”) having a forward region, sides and a back, and adapted to receive pods on both sides and on the back of said CCM, which includes:
(i) a driver module having seating for one or more persons, disposed on said CCM forward region, and having a hull shape that is generally V-shaped with upwardly extending slanted sides, front, and back, to direct blast energy through and around the vehicle;
and
(ii) an engine module containing a powertrain for powering said modular wheeled vehicle and connected with said driver module and forming a chimney through which a blast event is vented up and away from said modular vehicle;
(b) at least one side or rear multipurpose pod affixed to said CCM, said multipurpose pod also having a V-shaped hull to direct blast energy through said engine module and tractive units, between said CCM and said affixed multipurpose pod, and around said affixed multipurpose pod.
