Abstract
A method and apparatus for performing a read/write process on a recording medium having a defect, the method including determining an area of a recording medium, in which a defect, greater than a first set threshold, occurring in units of tracks, to be a massive defective area; adjusting a first parameter representing a logical track length, based on a size of a defect occurring in each track included in the massive defective area; and performing the read/write process on the recording medium by using the adjusted first parameter.
Claims28
A method of performing a read/write process on a recording medium, the method comprising:
- determining an area of the recording medium, in which a defect, greater than a set first threshold, and occurring in units of tracks, to be a massive defective area;
- adjusting a first parameter representing a logical track length, based on a size of a defect occurring in each track included in the massive defective area;
- and
- performing the read/write process on the recording medium by using the adjusted first parameter.

A storage device comprising:
- a recording medium comprising a plurality of tracks which store data;
- a media interface which writes information to, or reads information from, the recording medium by accessing the recording medium;
- and
- a processor which controls the media interface to write data to, or read data from, a target track of the recording medium,
- wherein, if a massive defective area in which a defect, greater than a first set threshold, and occurring in units of tracks, is present in the recording medium, then the processor adjusts a set first parameter representing a logical track length, based on a size of a defect occurring in each track of the massive defective area.

A method comprising:
- detecting that a track of a recording medium includes a defect greater than a first threshold, the defect occupying a defective area of the track;
- determining a length in a track-wise direction of the defective area;
- determining an adjusted logical track length in the track-wise direction of the track by subtracting the length of the defective area from a total physical length in the track-wise direction of the track;
- assigning a logical block addressing scheme to the track wherein no logical addresses are assigned to any data sectors in the defective area;
- and
- reading or writing to the track using the assigned logical block addressing scheme.
