## Abstract

A computer implemented method includes monitoring blocks of data on a storage device that are changing as the computer operates. On detecting a computer shut down event, a copy of changes to the monitored blocks are saved. Upon startup of the computer, a backup of the changed blocks of data is performed.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A computer implemented method comprising:
monitoring blocks of data on a storage device that are changing as the computer operates;
detecting a computer shut down event;
saving a copy of changes to the monitored blocks of data following detection of the shut down event; and
upon startup of the computer, performing a backup of the changed blocks of data.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The computer implemented method of claim 1 wherein saving a copy of the changes to the monitored blocks of data comprises creating a snapshot.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The computer implemented method of claim 2 wherein the snapshot is created using a volume shadow copy service of the computer.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The computer implemented method of claim 2 and further comprising storing an ID of the snapshot on the storage device following detection of the shut down event.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The computer implemented method of claim 4 and further comprising reading the ID of the snap shot upon startup of the computer.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The computer implemented method of claim 1 wherein the backup is performed as a background task of the computer.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The computer implemented method of claim 1 wherein monitoring blocks of data that are changing includes tracking the changes.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The computer implemented method of claim 1 wherein the backup of changed blocks comprises an incremental backup.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The computer implemented method of claim 8 and further comprising merging two incremental backups.

### Claim 10

A computer system comprising:
a monitor to monitor blocks of data on a storage device that are changing as the computer operates;
an event detector to detect a computer shut down event;
a storage device to save a copy of changes to the monitored blocks of data following detection of the shut down event; and
a backup module running on the computer system to perform a backup of the changed blocks of data upon startup of the computer system.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The computer system of claim 10 wherein the saved copy is changes to the monitored blocks of data is a snapshot.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The computer system of claim 11 wherein the snapshot is created using a volume shadow copy service running on the computer system.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The computer system of claim 11 wherein the backup module stores an ID of the snapshot on the storage device following detection of the shut down event.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The computer system of claim 13 wherein the backup module is programmed to read the ID of the snap shot upon startup of the computer system and perform the backup as a background task of the computer system.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The computer system of claim 1 wherein the backup of changed blocks comprises an incremental backup and wherein the backup module is programmed to merge two incremental backups.

### Claim 16

A computer readable storage device having instructions stored thereon to cause a computer to perform a method, the method comprising:
monitoring blocks of data on a storage device that are changing as the computer operates;
detecting a computer shut down event;
saving a copy of changes to the monitored blocks of data following detection of the shut down event; and
upon startup of the computer, performing a backup of the changed blocks of data.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The computer readable storage device of claim 16 wherein saving a copy of the changes to the monitored blocks of data comprises creating a snapshot.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The computer readable storage device of claim 17 wherein the snapshot is created using a volume shadow copy service of the computer.

### Claim 19 (depends on 17)

The computer readable storage device of claim 17 and further comprising storing an ID of the snapshot on the storage device following detection of the shut down event.

### Claim 20 (depends on 19)

The computer readable storage device of claim 19 and further comprising reading the ID of the snap shot upon startup of the computer.

### Claim 21 (depends on 16)

The computer readable storage device of claim 16 wherein the backup is performed as a background task of the computer.

### Claim 22 (depends on 16)

The computer readable storage device of claim 16 wherein the backup of changed blocks comprises an incremental backup and further comprising merging two incremental backups.
