## CPC

- H04N 23/45: for generating image signals from two or more image sensors being of different type or operating in different modes, e.g. with a CMOS sensor for moving images in combination with a charge-coupled device [CCD] for still images
- H04N 23/667: Camera operation mode switching, e.g. between still and video, sport and normal or high- and low-resolution modes
- H04N: PICTORIAL COMMUNICATION, e.g. TELEVISION

## Abstract

Still images can be captured during capture of video frames at different resolutions. Still image data and video data at different resolutions and in different data formats can be combined into a single file and stored in a memory. Storing the video data and still image data in a single file simplifies the process of displaying video in conjunction with display of representative still images.

### Claim 8

A video capture device, comprising:
an image sensor;
an imaging optical system optically coupled to the image sensor, wherein the imaging optical system is configured to focus an optical signal of onto the sensor;
a processor coupled to the sensor; and
a memory coupled to the processor, wherein the image sensor, processor, and memory are configured for storage the still image file and the video file, wherein the processor is configured to store data representing video frames in the memory at a first resolution in a video data format, and, while storing the video frames, store data corresponding to one or more still images in a dedicated location in the memory at a second resolution in a still image data format,
wherein the processor is further configured to combine the data representing the video frames and the data representing the still images into a single file.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The device of claim 8 wherein the processor is further configured to store the single file in the memory.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The device of claim 8 wherein the second resolution is at least four times greater than the first resolution.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

The device of claim 8 wherein the second resolution is at least ten times greater than the first resolution.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The device of claim 8 wherein the processor is configured to mark the data representing a still image or a video frame with a marker that synchronizes the still image to a corresponding one of the video frames.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The device of claim 12 wherein the marker marks a starting point for playback of the video frames.

### Claim 14

A method for forming a new file format that combines video frames and representative still images captured from a video capture device in a single file, comprising:
capturing an optical signal corresponding to a scene with an imaging optical system;
splitting the optical signal into first and second parts;
capturing the first part with a first photodetector as video frames at a first resolution;
capturing the second part with a second photodetector as one or more still images at a second resolution;
converting the still images to data in a still image format and converting the video frames to video data in a second format combining the still image data and the video frame data into a single file; and
storing the single file in a memory.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14 wherein the second resolution is at least four times greater than the first resolution.

### Claim 16 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14 wherein the second resolution is at least ten times greater than the first resolution.

### Claim 17 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14 further comprising marking the video data or the still image data with a marker that synchronizes a still image to a corresponding one of the video frames.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The method of claim 17 wherein the marker marks a starting point for playback of the video frames.

### Claim 19

A method for forming a new file format that combines video frames and representative still images captured from a video capture device in a single file, comprising:
capturing an optical signal corresponding to a scene with an imaging optical system and imaging the optical signal onto a photodetector array;
