## Abstract

A cut-to-measure display device comprising a plurality of pixel groups (300) and a main controller. Each pixel group comprises one sub-controller (301) and a plurality of individually controllable pixels (305), out of which all are connected to the sub-controller of the pixel group and at least one is further connected (304) to a sub-controller of an adjacent pixel group. The main controller is connected to the sub-controllers and configured to selectively control the sub-controllers in order that the pixels display an image corresponding to predetermined image data. Cutting a display device with these features into an arbitrary geometric shape may disconnect some pixels from their respective sub-controllers. However, at least one pixel in each pixel group is connected to a further sub-controller which is operable to take the place of a sub-controller from which it has been cut off, so there is a low risk of completely disconnecting pixels.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A cut-to-measure display device comprising:
a plurality of pixel groups, each pixel group comprising:
at least one sub-controller; and
a plurality of individually controllable pixels, connected at least to the sub-controller of the pixel group; and
a main controller connected to at least two sub-controllers of the plurality of pixel groups and configured to selectively control the sub-controllers in order that the pixels display an image corresponding to predetermined image data, wherein at least one pixel in each pixel group is further connected to and being individually controllable a sub-controller of an adjacent pixel group.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A cut-to-measure display device according to claim 1, wherein at least one pixel in each pixel group is connected to a sub-controller of a first pixel group and at least one pixel in the same pixel group is connected to a sub-controller of a second pixel group, wherein said first and said second pixel group are adjacent to the pixel group.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

A cut-to-measure display device according to claim 1, wherein at least one pixel in a pixel group is connected exclusively to the sub-controller of the pixel group.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

A cut-to-measure display device according to claim 1, wherein each pixel comprises at least one light-emitting diode.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

A cut-to-measure display device according to claim 1, wherein each sub-controller comprises:
a plurality of drivers, each being adapted to supply a drive current for driving a pixel;
a plurality of terminals, at least as many as the drivers, each of which is connectable to one pixel; and
a programmable switch for connecting drivers to terminals.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

A cut-to-measure display device according to claim 5, wherein each sub-controller comprises more drivers than the number of pixels in the pixel group.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5)

A cut-to-measure display device according to claim 5. wherein each sub-controller is further adapted to determine a connection status of its terminals.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

A cut-to-measure display device according to claim 7, wherein the main controller is adapted to:
poll any sub-controller connected thereto of its terminal connection status; and
operate the programmable switch of the sub-controller.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

A cut-to-measure display device according to claim 1, further comprising a flexible support layer, to which said pixels and sub-controllers are attached.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

A cut-to-measure display device according to claim 9, wherein the support layer is one of:
textile, and
glass.

### Claim 11

A method of providing a cut-to-measure display device for displaying an image using a cut-to-measure display device comprising a plurality of pixel groups, each of which comprising at least one sub-controller and a plurality of individually controllable pixels, connected to the sub-controller of the pixel group, least one pixel being further connected to a sub-controller of an adjacent pixel group, wherein the sub-controllers are communicatively interconnected, said method comprising the steps of:
processing a connection status of the sub-controllers and image information;
determining whether a pixel within a pixel group is disconnected from a sub-controller associated with said pixel group and, if so, causing a sub-controller associated with an adjacent pixel group to associate with and assume individual control of said pixel, and
selectively transmitting control commands to the sub-controllers.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

A method according to claim 11, further comprising the steps, to be executed prior to the steps of processing and transmitting, of:
cutting the display along a contour;
connecting a main controller to the sub-controllers; and
causing the sub-controllers to report their connection status.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

A method according to claim 11, wherein said step of causing a sub-controller associated with an adjacent pixel group to associate with and assume individual control of said pixel comprises:
associating, if possible, any pixel that is disconnected from the sub-controller in its own pixel group with a sub-controller in an adjacent pixel group;
reassigning pixels between sub-controllers of consecutive pixel groups if at least one disconnected pixel still exists; and
causing the sub-controllers to report their connection status.

### Claim 14

A computer-implemented method of positioning a closed two-dimensional contour relative to a two-dimensional lattice of pixels, sub-controllers and connections from pixels to sub-controllers, each pixel being the endpoint of one or more connections, the method comprising:
sampling a plurality of positions within one unit cell of the lattice;
counting, for each sampled position, the number of sub-controllers contained inside the contour when positioned there; and
selecting a position having the greatest possible number of sub-controllers inside the contour.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

A method according to claim 14, further comprising:
counting, if the greatest possible number of sub-controllers inside the contour is achieved for more than one position, for each of these positions, the number of pixels inside the contour that have no connection not intersecting the contour; and
selecting, from these positions, the position which yields the least number of pixels inside the contour that have no connection not intersecting the contour.
