Ambiguity measurement and management for configuration items

A method for measuring and managing ambiguity related to a configuration item transaction, comprising:

• receiving, by one or more processors executing an ambiguity management application, a transaction for a target configuration item in a plurality of configuration items, wherein each of the plurality of configuration items is associated with a set of one or more attributes;
• determining if there are two or more candidate configuration items in the plurality of configuration items such that the attribute set of the target configuration item and the attribute sets of the two or more candidate configuration items have one or more matching attributes each with a respective identical value;
• and
• measuring an ambiguity index for the transaction, the ambiguity index being a function of a representative number associated with the two or more candidate configuration items.

A system for managing ambiguity among a plurality of configuration items, comprising:

• one or more processors configured to:
• determine for at least a first configuration item associated with a first set of one or more attributes, one or more second configuration items each associated with a second set of one or more attributes, wherein the first set of one or more attributes and each of the second sets of one or more attributes have at least one attribute with an identical value;
• and
• measure an ambiguity index for the first configuration item, wherein the ambiguity index is a function of a representative number associated with the one or more second configuration items.

A system for managing ambiguity related to a configuration item transaction, comprising:

• one or more processors configured to:
• receive a transaction for a target configuration item in a plurality of configuration items, wherein each of the plurality of configuration items is associated with a set of one or more attributes;
• determine if there are two or more candidate configuration items in the plurality of configuration items such that the attribute set of the target configuration item and the attribute sets the two or more candidate configuration items have one or more matching attributes each with a respective identical value;
• and
• measure an ambiguity index for the transaction, the ambiguity index being a function of a representative number associated with the two or more candidate configuration items.
