Abstract
Methods of forming polycarbonate graft copolymers are provided. In particular, a polycarbonate polymer or copolymer containing allyl groups provides the backbone for the graft copolymer, and pendant chains are attached to the copolymer through the allyl groups. The graft copolymers exhibit a combination of high transparency, good graft levels, good scratch resistance, and/or good anti-fog properties.
Claims24
A graft copolymer comprising:
- a polycarbonate polymer backbone comprising repeating units derived from diallyl bisphenol A (DABPA);
- and
- polyvinylpyrrolidone pendant chains grafted to the polycarbonate copolymer backbone.
A graft copolymer comprising:
- a polycarbonate polymer backbone comprising repeating units derived from diallyl bisphenol A (DABPA);
- and
- pendant chains grafted to the polycarbonate polymer backbone, wherein the pendant chains are derived from methyl methacrylate;
- wherein the graft copolymer has a transparency (% T) of at least 89 and a haze of less than 5, when measured according to ASTM D1003 on a sample having a thickness of 0.25 mm.
A process for producing a polycarbonate graft copolymer comprising:
- providing a polycarbonate copolymer having a backbone comprising repeating units derived from diallyl bisphenol A (DABPA);
- contacting the polycarbonate copolymer with a first amount of monomer for a first period of time;
- and
- contacting the polycarbonate copolymer with a second amount of monomer for a second period of time to form the polycarbonate graft copolymer.
A process for producing a polycarbonate graft copolymer comprising:
- providing an initial solution comprising a polycarbonate copolymer and a solvent;
- heating the initial solution to an initial temperature to dissolve the polycarbonate copolymer, optionally wherein the initial temperature is from about 40° C. to about 80° C.;
- adding a first amount of initiator to the initial solution;
- adding a first amount of monomer to the initial solution to form an intermediate mixture and reacting the intermediate mixture for a first period of time, optionally wherein the first period of time is from about 5 hours to about 48 hours;
- adding a second amount of initiator to the intermediate mixture;
- adding a second amount of monomer to the intermediate mixture and reacting the intermediate mixture for a second period of time to form the polycarbonate graft copolymer, optionally wherein the second period of time is from about 5 hours to about 24 hours.
