Abstract
A digital display provides pulse-width-modulated pixel waveforms by applying a wired-NOR function to selected bits of stored image data. Image bits are selected according to a digital sequence and the wired-NOR function results in a trigger signal that may be used to switch the state of a pixel element. The pixel element may be a pixel state latch of a pixel driver circuit. The digital display may accept conventional 24-bit color video signals (one 8-bit gray-scale value for each pixel for each of the red, green, and blue primary colors), and convert this input signal to sequential color with PWM digital gray scale drive to each pixel.
Claims24
A digital display, comprising:
- an array of pixels, and
- a plurality of state elements each associated with a pixel of the array of pixels, wherein during operating of the digital display the state elements begin a light-modulating period in a first state and change to a second state based at least in part on a result of a NOR function of selected data bits of stored image data associated with the pixels.
A method of displaying an image, the method comprising:
- receiving digital image data in a digital display, the digital display including an array of pixels;
- controlling a state element of a pixel of the array of pixels to begin a light-modulating period in a first state;
- generating trigger events based on a function of image data bits associated with the pixel and a digital signal, the function producing a plurality of trigger events for a sequence of values of the digital signal during the light-modulating period;
- and
- controlling the state element to be in a second state upon occurrence of a first trigger event of the plurality of trigger events.
A method of displaying an image, the method comprising:
- receiving digital image data in a digital display, the digital display including an array of pixels;
- and
- controlling a pixel of the digital display to generate gray scale for a component color of the image using digital pulse width modulation, wherein a switching event for a state element of the pixel between a first state and a second state is dependent on a trigger condition, and wherein data bits of stored image data associated with the pixel are examined at a sequence of time steps, and wherein the trigger condition occurs when each examined bit of the stored image data is in a low state, and wherein a combination of ignored bit values of the stored image data is varied over the sequence of time steps.
