Abstract
Embodiments for cooling a turbine of an engine are provided. In one example embodiment, an internal combustion engine comprises a turbocharger including a turbine having a coolant jacket integrated in a housing of the turbine, and an oil circuit coupled to the coolant jacket of the turbine. By cooling the turbine with the oil circuit, the turbine may be constructed from less-heat resistant materials.
Claims20
An internal combustion engine, comprising:
- a turbocharger including a turbine having a coolant jacket integrated in a housing of the turbine;
- and
- an oil circuit coupled to the coolant jacket of the turbine.
A method for cooling a turbine of an internal combustion engine, comprising:
- routing engine oil via an oil circuit to the turbine;
- and
- increasing a temperature of the engine oil prior to reaching the turbine.
A method for an oil circuit of an engine, comprising:
- operating an oil pump to route oil through a first coolant jacket on an inlet side of a cylinder head to one or more oil consumers of the engine;
- and
- heating the oil prior to reaching the coolant jacket by routing the oil through a second coolant jacket of a turbine coupled to an exhaust passage of the engine.
