A method of classifying a subject based on eye movement characteristics, comprising:
- conducting a visual paired-comparison (VPC) test on a computer based system, the VPC test including at least one delay interval, the at least one delay interval being at least about 2 minutes;
- generating eye movement characteristics for the subject from at least one of a peripheral input device and an eye tracking device;
- classifying the eye movement characteristics with respect to a plurality of classifiers, the classifiers including a normal state and a plurality of disease states, each classifier being specific to each disease state;
- and
- providing classification of the subject.

A method of classifying a subject based on eye movement characteristics, comprising:
- conducting a visual paired-comparison (VPC) test on a computer based system, the VPC test including at least one trial, each trial displaying at least one image that is blurred;
- generating eye movement characteristics for the subject for each phase by measuring the movements of a peripheral input device, the movements include movements of the peripheral input device that incrementally remove blur from the image;
- classifying the eye movement characteristics with respect to a plurality of classifiers, the classifiers including a normal state and a plurality of disease states, each classifier being specific to each disease state;
- and
- providing classification of the subject.
