Abstract
A catalyst structure for an electrochemical cell includes a catalyst support structure, catalyst particles and an outer carbide film The catalyst particles are deposited on the catalyst support structure. The outer carbide film is formed on the catalyst support structure. The outer carbide film surrounds the catalyst particles.

A catalyst structure for an electrochemical cell, the catalyst structure comprising:
- a catalyst support structure;
- catalyst particles deposited on the catalyst support structure;
- and
- an outer carbide film formed on the catalyst support structure and surrounding the catalyst particles to anchor the catalyst particles to the catalyst support structure, wherein the outer carbide film is preferentially formed on the catalyst support structure compared to the catalyst particles.

A method of forming a catalyst structure, the method comprising:
- providing a catalyst support structure;
- depositing catalyst nanoparticles on the catalyst support structure;
- and
- forming an outer carbide film on the catalyst support structure by microwave irradiation after the step of depositing catalyst nanoparticles, wherein the outer carbide film preferentially forms on the catalyst support structure compared to the catalyst nanoparticles.
