Abstract
A technique for making media content in the form of encoded data items decodable by a decoder operating in accordance with a scalable coding protocol that defines two or more media layers is provided. A method implementation of this technique comprises the steps of generating one or more dummy data items that define a first media layer of the scalable coding protocol, and marking the encoded data items as belonging, to a second media layer of the scalable coding protocol.

A method of converting data items of a media content all encoded in accordance with a single-layer coding protocol into encoded data items decodable by a decoder operating in accordance with a scalable coding protocol defining two or more media layers, the method comprising:
- generating one or more dummy data items that define a first media layer of the scalable coding protocol;
- marking the encoded data items of the media content as belonging to a second media layer of the scalable coding protocol;
- and
- generating at least one bitstream comprising the marked encoded data items of the media content and the generated dummy data items.
A computer program product comprising non-transient program code stored on a computer readable medium for execution by one or more computing devices in a media server to cause said one or more computing devices to convert data items of a media content all encoded in accordance with a single-layer coding protocol into encoded data items decodable by a decoder operating in accordance with a scalable coding protocol defining two or more media layers, said program code comprising program instructions configured to cause said one or more computing devices to:
- generate one or more dummy data items that define a first media layer of the scalable coding protocol;
- mark the encoded data items of the media content as belonging to a second media layer of the scalable coding protocol;
- and
- generate at least one bitstream comprising the marked encoded data items of the media content and the generated dummy data items.
A converting device for converting data items of a media content all encoded in accordance with a single-layer coding protocol into encoded data items decodable by a decoder operating in accordance with a scalable coding protocol defining two or more media layers, the device comprising:
- a generator configured to generate one or more dummy data items that define a first media layer of the scalable coding protocol;
- and
- an adaptor configured to mark the encoded data items of the media content as belonging to a second media layer of the scalable coding protocol.
A converting system comprising:
- the converting device for converting data items of a media content all encoded in accordance with a single-layer coding protocol into encoded data items decodable by a decoder operating in accordance with a scalable coding protocol defining two or more media layers, the converting device comprising:
- a generator configured to generate one or more dummy data items that define a first media layer of the scalable coding protocol;
- an adaptor configured to mark the encoded data items of the media content as belonging to a second media layer of the scalable coding protocol;
- an input interface;
- and
- an output interface;
- a data storage coupled to the input interface of the converting device, the data storage storing the encoded data items;
- and
- a bitstream maker coupled to the output interface of the converting device, the bitstream maker configured to generate at least one bitstream comprising the generated dummy data items and the marked encoded data items of the media content.
