Abstract
A process for making magnetite nanoparticle dispersions by reacting the surface groups of the destructured magnetite ore with carboxyl acid groups of the long chain carboxylic acid to form nanoparticles containing bound stabilizer and dispersing the nanoparticles in alcoholic solvent.
Claims13
A process for making magnetite nanoparticle dispersions comprising:
- (a) providing a magnetite ore;
- (b) destructuring the magnetite ore;
- (c) contacting the destructured magnetite ore with a long chain alkyl carboxylic acid;
- (d) reacting surface groups present in the destructured magnetite ore with carboxyl acid groups of the long chain carboxylic acid to form nanoparticles containing a bound stabilizer;
- and
- (e) dispersing the nanoparticles containing the bound stabilizer in alcoholic solvent.

The process of 10 wherein the grinding is performed in an inert atmosphere with:
- (a) 15 mm size tungsten carbide grinding balls at 700 rpm for about one hour;
- (b) further grinding using 5 mm size tungsten carbide grinding balls at 700 rpm for about one hour;
- (c) further grinding using 3 mm size zirconium oxide grinding balls at 1000 rpm for about one hour;
- (d) further grinding using 1 mm size zirconium oxide grinding balls at 1000 rpm for about one hour;
- and
- (e) further grinding using 0.5 mm size zirconium oxide grinding balls at 1000 rpm for about one hour.

A dispersion formed by a process comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing a magnetite ore;
- (b) destructuring the magnetite ore;
- (c) contacting the destructured magnetite ore with a long chain alkyl carboxylic acid;
- (d) reacting surface groups present in the destructured magnetite ore with carboxyl acid groups of the long chain carboxylic acid to form nanoparticles containing a bound stabilizer;
- and
- (e) dispersing the nanoparticles containing the bound stabilizer in alcoholic solvent.
