Abstract
An improved door assembly has a single movable door and may have a separate movable high platform threshold. The door assembly is formed of an upper door section and a lower door section which is fixed to the upper door section. A support member may be integral with or slidably engaged with the door assembly, disposed as an angle iron fixed to the door assembly, or disposed on the side of a stairwell of a rail passenger car.

A door system for a railway vehicle having a door opening and a stairwell extending downwardly from a vehicle floor level to a bottom end of the door opening, the door system comprising:
- a sliding door displaceable between open and closed positions for selectively closing the door opening;
- a stairwell platform displaceable between a retracted position for clearing the stairwell and an extended position for covering the stairwell;
- and
- means for providing a continuation of the stairwell platform when the stairwell platform is in the extended position and the sliding door is in the open position and for clearing the door opening when the stairwell platform is in the retracted position and the sliding door is in the open position.
