Products from step-wise extraction of algal biomasses

A method of producing products comprising:

• a. dewatering intact algal cells to make an algal biomass;
• b. combining about 1 part isopropyl alcohol and about 1 part ethanol to form an isopropyl alcohol-ethanol mixture;
• c. adding a first fraction of the isopropyl alcohol-ethanol mixture to the algal biomass in a ratio of about 1 part isopropyl alcohol-ethanol mixture to about 1 part algal biomass by weight to form a first algal-alcohol mixture;
• d. separating solids of the algal biomass of the first algal-alcohol mixture from a first liquid fraction of the first algal-alcohol mixture, wherein the first liquid fraction comprises proteins;
• e. combining the separated solids of the algal biomass of the first algal-alcohol mixture with a second fraction of isopropyl alcohol-ethanol mixture in a ratio of about 1 part isopropyl alcohol-ethanol mixture to about 1 part solids by weight to form a second algal-alcohol mixture;
• f. separating solids of the algal biomass of the second algal-alcohol mixture from a second liquid fraction of the second algal-alcohol mixture, wherein the second liquid fraction comprises polar lipids;
• g. combining the separated solids of the algal biomass of a second algal-alcohol mixture with a third fraction of isopropyl alcohol-ethanol mixture in a ratio of about 1 part isopropyl alcohol-ethanol mixture to about 1 part solid biomass by weight to form a third algal-alcohol mixture;
• h. separating solids of the algal biomass of the third algal-alcohol mixture from a third liquid fraction of the third algal-alcohol mixture, wherein the third liquid fraction comprises neutral lipids, including omega-3 fatty acids, carotenoids, and chlorophyll, and solids of the algal biomass of the third algal-alcohol mixture comprise carbohydrates;
• and
• i. isolating at least one of carotenoids, chlorophyll, and omega-3 fatty acids from the third liquid fraction.
