Abstract
A light source includes a hot electron source comprising a cathode that generates an electron beam and an anode comprising a germanium containing material positioned adjacent to the cathode. The anode is biased so that the electron beam accelerates towards the anode where some electrons are absorbed and then relax to both direct energy bands and indirect energy bands causing stimulation of low energy electrons from the indirect energy band to the direct energy band, thereby creating electroluminescence.

A light source comprising:
- a) a hot electron source comprising a cathode that generates an electron beam;
- and
- b) an anode comprising a germanium containing material positioned adjacent to the cathode, the anode being biased so that the electron beam accelerates towards the anode, some electrons in the electron beam are absorbed and then relax to both direct energy bands and indirect energy bands causing stimulation of low energy electrons from the indirect energy band to the direct energy band, thereby creating electroluminescence.
A method of generating light:
- a) generating an electron beam with a field emission cathode;
- and
- b) accelerating the electron beam towards an anode comprising a germanium containing material, wherein some electrons in the electron beam are absorbed and then relax to both the direct energy bands and indirect energy bands causing stimulation of low energy electrons from the indirect energy band to the direct energy band, thereby creating electroluminescence.
A light source comprising:
- a) an anode comprising a germanium containing material;
- and
- b) a plurality of field emission devices positioned around the anode, each of the plurality of field emission devices comprising a cathode that generates an electron beam directed towards the anode, the anode being biased so that the electron beams accelerate towards the anode where some electrons in the electron beams are absorbed and then relax to both direct energy bands and indirect energy bands causing stimulation of low energy electrons from the indirect energy band to the direct energy band thereby creating electroluminescence.
