A method for stimulating a plant which comprises contacting a plant, plant part, or a seedling or seed thereof with a lipochitooligosaccharide defined by the formula (I):
- wherein n=0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, R1 represents a lipid substituent containing 12-22 carbon atoms, and R2 represents H or SO3H, and wherein stimulating comprises:
- (a) stimulating mycorrhization of the plant;
- (b) stimulating root system development of the plant;
- or
- (c) stimulating germination of the seed.
A mixture of lipochitooligosaccharides comprising a lipochitooligosaccharide of formula (I) wherein R2 represents H, and a lipochitooligosaccharide of formula (I) wherein R2 represents SO3H.
An arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculant which comprises as an additive a lipochitooligosaccharide defined by the formula (I):
- wherein n=0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5;
- R1 represents a lipid substituent containing 12-22 carbon atoms;
- and
- R2 represents H or SO3H.
