Abstract
The present invention provides compositions, preparations, formulations, kits, and methods useful for treating subjects having cancer or at risk of developing cancer. Some embodiments of the invention may comprise a composition comprising a plurality of particles comprising a platinum(IV) therapeutically active precursor.
Claims25
A method of treating a patient in need of a therapeutic protocol, comprising:
- administering to the patient a plurality of particles at least some of which comprise a base component and at least one small molecule drug or drug precursor comprising at least one auxiliary compatibilizing moiety selected so as to provide the drug or drug precursor with suitable compatibility with the base component so that a substantial portion of the drug or drug precursor is contained within the particles during delivery of the particles to a patient and transport of at least some of the particles to a site of delivery,
- wherein those particles transported to the site of delivery release a substantial portion of the drug or drug precursor at the site of delivery and participate in a chemical or biological therapeutic process.
A composition for treating a patient in need of a therapeutic protocol, comprising:
- a plurality of particles, at least some of which comprise an interior, an exterior, and a base component, with interiors more hydrophobic than exteriors;
- and
- a precursor of a substantially hydrophilic small molecule drug or drug precursor substantially contained within the interiors of the particles, in an amount of at least 0.1% by weight based on the weight of the particles.

A method for treating a patient in need of a therapeutic protocol, comprising:
- administering to the patient a composition comprising a plurality of particles, at least some of which comprise an interior, an exterior, and a base component, with interiors more hydrophobic than exteriors, and a precursor of a substantially hydrophilic small molecule drug or drug precursor substantially contained within the interiors of the particles, wherein at least about 30% of the precursor of a substantially hydrophilic small molecule drug or drug precursor is present in the blood stream of the patient at a time period of at least about 1 hour following administration of the composition.
