Abstract
A method includes operating in a normal mode to receive and transmit packets, where the network device is one of multiple network devices that operate as a virtual chassis, where the virtual chassis corresponds to a single logical network device, and detecting when the network device crashes. The method further includes initiating a resetting process and operating in a pass through mode, during the resetting process, where the pass through mode permits packets to be received and transmitted to the network devices of the virtual chassis.

A network device comprising:
- a physical port associated with a virtual port of a logical network device, the logical network device including the network device and other network devices, where, when the network device is in a first operating mode, a packet processor receives, via the virtual port, one or more packets transmitted through the logical network device, and
- a switch coupled to the physical port, where the switch is to:
- detect a failure of the packet processor,
- change, in response to detecting the failure of the packet processor, the network device from the first operating mode to a second operating mode, and
- bypass, when the network device is in the second operating mode, the packet processor, where the switch, when bypassing the packet processor, is to redirect additional packets, received via the virtual port, to at least one of the other network devices.
A computer-readable medium to store instructions that are executable by a processor in a device, the instructions comprising:
- one or more instructions to monitor a first network device, where the first network device and a second network device are included in a virtual device;
- one or more instructions to detect a failure of the first network device;
- and
- one or more instructions to redirect, in response to detecting the failure, traffic, received at the virtual device and intended to be sent to the first network device, to the second network device and not to the first network device.
A method comprising:
- monitoring, by a device, a first network device, where the first network device and a second network device are included as part of a virtual device;
- detecting, by the device, a failure of the first network device;
- identifying, by the device, traffic received by the virtual device that is intended for the first network device;
- and
- redirecting, in response to detecting the failure, the traffic to the second network device without sending the traffic of the first network device.
