Abstract
A system and method of forming surfaces on eyeglass lenses is described. In some examples, the surface is a spherical, cylindrical or spherocylindrical surface at a center of the lens and an aspherical surface at a periphery of the lens. In some examples, forming the surface on the lens reduces the thickness of the lens at the periphery of the lens.
Claims29
A computer-implemented method of providing electronic instructions for a lens surfacing apparatus, the method comprising:
- specifying an optical correction parameter related to an optical center point located on a surface of a lens, wherein the optical correction parameter defines an initial lens surface as having a uniform radius of curvature;
- defining a saggital depth adjustment for a set of points located on the initial lens surface at specified radial distances from the optical center point,
- wherein the saggital depth adjustment defines an adjusted set of points not located on the initial lens surface;
- and
- providing electronic instructions for the lens surfacing apparatus to create an adjusted surface on the lens,
- wherein a cross-section of the adjusted surface includes at least one substantially conic section that is fit to the optical center point, to at least one of the adjusted set of points, and to the initial lens surface.
A method of providing instructions to a lens surfacing apparatus for surfacing a lens, the method comprising:
- defining a three-dimensional surface having a uniform radius of curvature,
- wherein the uniform radius of curvature is associated with a prescription for the lens;
- defining a sagittal depth adjustment for at least one point located on the three-dimensional surface at a specified distance from a predetermined point,
- wherein the sagittal depth adjustment defines at least one adjusted point not located on the three-dimensional surface;
- fitting at least one conic section, wherein the at least one conic section is fit to the predetermined point, the at least one point, and the three-dimensional surface;
- fitting an adjusted surface to the at least one conic section;
- and
- instructing the lens surfacing apparatus to create the adjusted surface on a back surface of the lens,
- wherein the predetermined point is an optical center point on the back surface of the lens.
A computer-readable medium storing processing instructions for implementing an operation performed by a computer, the operation comprising:
- defining a three-dimensional surface having a uniform radius of curvature,
- wherein the uniform radius of curvature is associated with a prescription for the lens;
- defining a sagittal depth adjustment for at least one point located on the three-dimensional surface at a specified distance from a predetermined point,
- wherein the sagittal depth adjustment defines at least one adjusted point not located on the three-dimensional surface;
- fitting at least one conic section, wherein the at least one conic section is fit to the predetermined point, the at least one point, and the three-dimensional surface;
- fitting an adjusted surface to the at least one conic section;
- and
- generating an instruction for the lens surfacing apparatus to create the adjusted surface on a back surface of the lens,
- wherein the predetermined point is an optical center point on the back surface of the lens.
A spherocylindrical lens for use with eyeglasses, the lens comprising:
- a front surface;
- and
- a back surface,
- wherein at least one cross-section of the back surface is defined by one or more conic sections,
- wherein the conic sections exclude a circle,
- wherein the back surface includes a first area and a second area,
- wherein the first area of the lens contains an optical center of the lens,
- wherein the conic section in the first area substantially conforms to a radius of curvature based at least upon a lens prescription,
- wherein the conic section meets a predetermined saggital depth at one point in the second area of the lens,
- wherein the predetermined saggital depth differs from the lens prescription of the first area.
