Abstract
A filter element, a safety element and fluid cleaner assembly. The fluid cleaner assembly generally includes a housing having a cover and a primary fluid cleaner section. The element generally comprises z-filter media, arranged in a straight through configuration, and an axial seal gasket positioned to extend continuously around at outer perimeter of the straight through flow construction. The fluid cleaner assembly can have a precleaner positioned therein. Methods of assembly and use are provided.
Claims22
An air cleaner comprising:
- (a) a housing;
- (b) a primary filter element operably installed within the housing;
- the primary filter element including a media construction having an inlet flow end and an outlet flow end and wherein the primary filter element is configured to provide straight through flow;
- (i) the primary filter element having a cross-sectional configuration including a pair of spaced opposite curved ends;
- (ii) the primary filter element including an axial seal member extending completely peripherally around the media construction and axially sealed to a portion of the housing, the seal member including first and second opposite sides and an outer annular surface;
- the first and second opposite sides of the seal member being compressed axially toward one another in sealing the primary filter element to the housing;
- and
- (c) a precleaner upstream of the primary filter element;
- the precleaner including multiple centrifugal separators and an ejection tube.

An air filter cartridge comprising:
- (a) a z-filter media construction having:
- an inlet flow face;
- an opposite outlet flow face;
- and, a non-circular outer perimeter;
- (i) the z-filter media construction comprising a coiled construction of fluted media secured to non-fluted media;
- (b) a frame member mounted on, and secured to, the z-filter media construction adjacent the inlet flow face;
- (i) the frame member including a radially inwardly extending lip that hooks over the media construction and abuts the inlet flow face;
- (ii) the frame member including a band that extends completely, peripherally, around the media construction;
- and,
- (iii) the frame member including a radially, outwardly, extending projection that is positioned on the band and extends completely peripherally around the media construction;
- and,
- (c) a seal member extending completely, peripherally, around the band and the media construction.
An air filter cartridge comprising:
- (a) a z-filter media construction having:
- an inlet flow face;
- an opposite outlet flow face;
- and, a non-circular outer perimeter with two opposite rounded end sections;
- (i) the z-filter media construction comprising a coiled construction of fluted media secured to non-fluted media;
- and,
- (ii) the media construction including a non-cylindrical central core comprising a member including a non-cylindrical recess adjacent the outlet flow face and defined between two ends of the core located adjacent the outlet flow face;
- (b) a frame member mounted on, and secured to, the z-filter media construction adjacent the inlet flow face;
- (i) the frame member including a band that extends completely, peripherally, around the media construction;
- and,
- (ii) the frame member including a radially, outwardly, extending projection that is positioned on the band and extends completely peripherally around the media construction;
- and,
- (c) a seal member extending completely, peripherally, around the band and the media construction.
A method of assembling an air filter cartridge;
- the method comprising steps of:
- (a) providing a frame member comprising a band surrounding an interior and having a radially inwardly directed lip and a radially outwardly extending projection;
- (b) providing a z-filter media construction having:
- an inlet flow face;
- an opposite outlet flow face;
- and, a non-circular outer perimeter;
- (i) the z-filter media construction comprising a coiled two-layered construction of fluted media secured to non-fluted media;
- and,
- (c) pushing the frame member over the z-filter media construction, with the band surrounding the media construction, until the lip engages the inlet flow face.
A method of installing a filter cartridge in a housing on the air cleaner:
- (a) providing an air filter cartridge comprising:
- (i) a z-filter media construction having:
- an inlet face;
- an opposite outlet flow face;
- and, a non-circular outer perimeter;
- (A) the z-filter media construction comprising a coiled two-layered construction of fluted media secured to non-fluted media;
- (ii) a frame member mounted on and secured to the z-filter media construction adjacent the inlet flow face;
- (A) the frame member including a radially inwardly extending lip that hooks over the media construction and abuts the inlet flow face;
- (B) the frame member including a band that extends completely, peripherally, around the media construction;
- and,
- (C) the frame member including a radially, outwardly, extending projection that is positioned on the band and extends completely peripherally around the media construction;
- and,
- (iii) a seal member extending completely, peripherally, around the band and the media construction;
- and,
- (b) pushing the outlet face of the z-filter media construction in the housing until the seal member engages the housing with the inlet flow face projecting from the housing;
- and,
- (c) mounting a cover on the housing over the inlet flow face of the filter cartridge with the seal member positioned in a joint between the cover and housing.
