Multi-pane glass unit having seal with adhesive and hermetic coating layer

A vacuum insulated glass unit (VIGU), comprising:

• a first pane of a transparent material;
• a metal member bonded to the first pane with a first adhesive layer;
• a second pane of a transparent material, the second pane being spaced apart from the first pane to define a cavity therebetween;
• and
• a highly hermetic coating disposed over the adhesive layer, where the coating is an inorganic layer.

A vacuum insulated glass unit (VIGU), comprising:

• a first glass pane;
• a first metal part bonded to the first glass pane with a first adhesive layer;
• a second glass pane, the second glass pane being spaced apart from the first glass pane to define a cavity therebetween;
• an array of stand-off members disposed in the cavity between the first and second glass panes to maintain separation therebetween;
• a second metal part bonded to the second glass pane with a second adhesive layer;
• and
• a first barrier coating on at least one of the glass panes and the metal parts, where the first barrier coating decreases the rate of permeation of gas into the cavity.
