Abstract
A Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) transmits medical image information from a server to a viewing workstation. The mode of transmission that the system uses depends on a performance metric of the network. If the network is fast and stable, the entire DICOM image file is transmitted. If the network is not fast and stable, one of several other modes is used to transmit the image information.

An imaging system, comprising:
- a network characteristic measurement system to estimate a value of at least one characteristic of a network adapted to transmit medical image information from a server to a viewing workstation, the medical image information to be transmitted in a selected transmission mode selected from a plurality of transmission modes, the network characteristic measurement system to select a selected transmission mode from the plurality of transmission modes, the plurality of transmission modes organized in a hierarchy of transmission modes, each of the transmission modes being associated with a different value of the at least one characteristic of the network;
- wherein when the viewing workstation receives an input requesting the transfer of medical information from the server, the network characteristic measurement system requests the transmission of the medical image information from the server across the network to the viewing workstation in the selected transmission mode.
A method of adaptive selection of image streaming mode in a picture archiving and communications system (PACS), the method comprising:
- storing image information on a server in communication with a viewing workstation associated with the PACS;
- initiating a transfer of image information from the server to the viewing workstation;
- determining, with a network characteristic measurement system associated with the PACS, a value of at least one network characteristic of the communications network, the network characteristic measurement system being connected to the communications network;
- establishing, with the network characteristic measurement system, a hierarchy of a plurality of transmission modes wherein each of the transmission modes in the hierarchy is associated with a value of the at least one network characteristic;
- selecting, with the network characteristic measurement system, a transmission mode from the hierarchy of the plurality of transmission modes;
- requesting, with the network characteristic measurement system, the transfer of the image information from the server to the viewing workstation in the selected transmission mode;
- processing the image information with the server into the selected transmission mode;
- and
- transmitting the image information in the selected transmission mode from the server to the viewing workstation via the communications network.
