A method for lowering blood glucose levels in a mammal, comprising administering neurturin product to the mammal in an amount sufficient to increase a neurturin concentration in islet cells relative to an untreated mammal, wherein blood glucose levels in a mammal are lowered.
A method for generating insulin producing cells, comprising contacting cells that express a pancreatic gene with an effective amount of a neurturin product;
- thereby generating insulin producing beta-cells.
A pharmaceutical composition suitable for lowering blood glucose levels in a mammal, comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a neurturin product, wherein the neurturin product generates insulin-producing cells when administered to cells expressing a pancreatic gene.
