Abstract
A method for cutting surgical rod in situ is provided. The method includes positioning an operable end of a surgical rod scorer around surgical rod that has been previously affixed to a spinal segment via at least two pedicle screws. A portion of the surgical rod is scored with the surgical rod scorer. The scored surgical rod is grasped with a surgical rod bender. And, the scored surgical rod is bent such that the surgical rod separates along the scored portion of the surgical rod.
Claims21
A method for cutting surgical rod in situ, comprising:
- positioning an operable end of a surgical rod scorer around a surgical rod that has been previously affixed to a spinal segment via at least two bone anchors;
- scoring a portion of the surgical rod with the surgical rod scorer;
- grasping the scored surgical rod with a surgical rod bender;
- and
- bending the scored surgical rod such that the surgical rod separates along the scored portion of the surgical rod.
2 more elements
An apparatus for scoring a surgical rod comprising:
- first and second handle half portions defining a proximal handle portion and a cavity between the proximal handle portions, the first and second handle half portions further defining a hook portion extending distal to the proximal handle portion;
- a plurality of substantially circular blades rotatably supported between the handle half portions in the hook portion;
- at least one reciprocating member disposed in the cavity between the first and second handle half portions, the reciprocating member rotatably supporting at least one substantially circular blade adjacent the distal end of the reciprocating member, the reciprocating member translatable from a retracted position in which the hook and retracting member define an opening configured and dimensioned to receive a surgical rod therethrough into the hook portion, and an extended position in which the substantially circular blades mounted to the hook portion and the reciprocating member contact the rod.
