The present invention relates to methods for the treatment of cancer based on the induction of the choline kinase beta (hereinafter ChoKβ) activity as well as to methods for the design of personalized therapies and for determining the response of an agent capable of inducing choline kinase beta (hereinafter ChoKβ) for the treatment of cancer as well as to methods for determining the prognosis of a patient based on the determination of the ChoKβ expression levels as well as based on the determination of the relationship between the ChoKβ and ChoKα expression levels. Finally, the invention relates to methods for determining the response of a patient who suffers from cancer to ChoKα-inhibiting agents based on the determination of the PEMT and/or ChoKβ expression levels.

A method for determining the prognosis of a patient suffering from cancer, comprising determining the ChoKβ expression levels in a sample of said patient, wherein reduced ChoKβ levels in relation to the levels in a reference sample are indicative of the patient showing a poor prognosis.
A method for determining the prognosis of a patient suffering from cancer, comprising determining the ChoKα and ChoKβ expression levels in a sample of said patient, wherein reduced levels of ChoKα and high levels of ChoKβ in relation to the expression levels of said proteins in a reference sample are indicative of the patient showing a good prognosis.
A method for determining the response of a patient with cancer to the treatment with a ChoKα inhibitor, comprising determining in a sample of said patient the expression levels of a protein selected from the group of PEMT and ChoKβ, wherein an increase of the PEMT expression levels or an increase of expression of the levels of ChoKβ in relation to the levels in a reference sample are indicative of a good response to the ChoKα inhibitor.
A method for the treatment of cancer in a subject in need thereof, comprising administering to said patient a ChoKβ activity-inducing agent.
