Non-cytotoxic compositions for tooth whitening are disclosed, as are their methods of use are also provided.

A method of whitening a tooth surface, the method comprising contacting the surface of a tooth with an efficacious amount of a substantially non-irritating and/or substantially non-cytotoxic composition, wherein the composition comprises a bleaching agent that whitens the contacted tooth surface, wherein the bleaching agent is chlorine dioxide.
A method of whitening a tooth surface, the method comprising contacting the surface of a tooth with an efficacious amount of a composition that does not substantially damage hard tooth tissue, wherein the composition comprises a bleaching agent that whitens the contacted tooth surface, wherein the bleaching agent is chlorine dioxide.
