Handoff between base stations of different protocol revisions in a cdma system

In a CDMA communication system, an apparatus for supporting handoff of a terminal between base stations of different protocol revisions, comprising:

• means for performing a handoff of the terminal from a first base station to a second base station, wherein the handoff is performed while the terminal is in an active call using a first service configuration with the first base station, and wherein the first base station supports a first protocol revision and the second base station supports a second protocol revision that is later than the first protocol revision;
• means for sending a first message indicative of a change in packet zone;
• means for receiving a request to originate a new call with a second service configuration;
• and
• means for maintaining the new call with the second service configuration between the terminal and the second base station.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions, which, when executed by a machine, cause the machine to perform operations for supporting handoff of a terminal between base stations of different protocol revisions, the instructions comprising:

• code for performing a handoff of the terminal from a first base station to a second base station, wherein the handoff is performed while the terminal is in an active call using a first service configuration with the first base station, and wherein the first base station supports a first protocol revision and the second base station supports a second protocol revision that is later than the first protocol revision;
• code for sending a first message indicative of a change in packet zone;
• code for receiving a request to originate a new call with a second service configuration;
• and
• code maintaining the new call with the second service configuration between the terminal and the second base station.

A call control processor in a CDMA communication system;

• configured to handoff a terminal between base stations of different protocol revisions, wherein the call control processor is configured to:
• perform a handoff of the terminal from a first base station to a second base station, wherein the handoff is performed while the terminal is in an active call using a first service configuration with the first base station, and wherein the first base station supports a first protocol revision and the second base station supports a second protocol revision that is later than the first protocol revision;
• send a first message indicative of a change in packet zone;
• receive a request to originate a new call with a second service configuration;
• and
• maintain the new call with the second service configuration between the terminal and the second base station.

In a CDMA communication system, a method for supporting handoff of a terminal between base stations of different protocol revisions, comprising:

• performing a handoff of the terminal from a first base station to a second base station, wherein the handoff is performed while the terminal is in an active call with the first base station using a first service configuration, and wherein the first base station supports a first protocol revision and the second base station supports a second protocol revision that is later than the first protocol revision;
• purging the first service configuration used for the active call prior to the handoff;
• and
• maintaining the active call between the terminal and the second base station after the handoff using a second service configuration supported by the second protocol revision.

In a CDMA communication system, a method for supporting handoff of a terminal between base stations of different protocol revisions, comprising:

• performing a handoff of the terminal from a first base station to a second base station, wherein the handoff is performed while the terminal is in an active call using a first service configuration with the first base station, and wherein the first base station supports a first protocol revision and the second base station supports a second protocol revision that is later than the first protocol revision;
• sending a first message indicative of a change in packet zone;
• receiving a request to originate a new call with a second service configuration;
• and
• maintaining the new call with the second service configuration between the terminal and the second base station.

A memory communicatively coupled to a digital signal processing device (DSPD) capable of interpreting digital information to:

• perform a handoff of a terminal from a first base station to a second base station in a CDMA communication system, wherein the handoff is performed while the terminal is in an active call with the first base station using a first service configuration, and wherein the first base station supports a first protocol revision and the second base station supports a second protocol revision that is later than the first protocol revision;
• purge the first service configuration used for the active call prior to the handoff;
• and
• maintain the active call between the terminal and the second base station after the handoff using a second service configuration supported by the second protocol revision.

A computer program product for supporting handoff of a terminal between base stations of different protocol revisions, comprising:

• code for performing a handoff of the terminal from a first base station to a second base station, wherein the handoff is performed while the terminal is in an active call with the first base station using a first service configuration, and wherein the first base station supports a first protocol revision and the second base station supports a second protocol revision that is later than the first protocol revision;
• code for purging the first service configuration used for the active call prior to the handoff;
• code for maintaining the active call between the terminal and the second base station after the handoff using a second service configuration supported by the second protocol revision;
• and
• a computer-usable medium for storing the code.

A terminal in a CDMA communication system, comprising:

• means for performing a handoff from a first base station to a second base station in the CDMA system, wherein the handoff is performed while the terminal is in an active call with the first base station using a first service configuration, and wherein the first base station supports a first protocol revision and the second base station supports a second protocol revision that is later than the first protocol revision;
• means for purging the first service configuration used for the active call prior to the handoff;
• and
• means for maintaining the active call with the second base station after the handoff using a second service configuration supported by the second protocol revision.

A CDMA communication system, comprising:

• means for performing a handoff of a terminal from a first base station to a second base station in the CDMA system, wherein the handoff is performed while the terminal is in an active call with the first base station using a first service configuration, and wherein the first base station supports a first protocol revision and the second base station supports a second protocol revision that is later than the first protocol revision;
• means for purging the first service configuration used for the active call prior to the handoff;
• and
• means for maintaining the active call with the second base station after the handoff using a second service configuration supported by the second protocol revision.

A terminal device in a CDMA communication system comprising a controller, the controller configured to:

• perform a handoff from a first base station to a second base station in the CDMA system, wherein the handoff is performed while the terminal is in an active call with the first base station using a first service configuration established in accordance with a first protocol revision, wherein the first base station supports the first protocol revision and the second base station supports a second protocol revision that is later than the first protocol revision, wherein the terminal supports a terminal protocol revision, and wherein the protocol revision used between the terminal and second base station is the lower of the terminal protocol revision and the second protocol revision;
• purge, after the handoff, the first service configuration;
• determine if a dormant call exists simultaneously with the active call, and if the dormant call exists, determining if the active call is of the same type as the dormant call;
• assign an identifier to the active call if the active call is of the same type as the dormant call, wherein the identifier identifies a second service configuration;
• and
• maintain the active call with the second base station after the handoff using the second service configuration supported by the second protocol revision.

A method for handoff of a terminal between base stations of different protocol revisions, comprising:

• establishing a data call with a base station, wherein the data call is associated with a first point-to-point protocol session, and wherein the first point-to-point protocol session is associated with a service option for a high-speed packet data call;
• performing a first handoff of the terminal while the data call is dormant, wherein the first handoff is from the base station to a first base station;
• originating a new data call with the first base station after the first handoff is performed, wherein the new data call is associated with a second point-to-point protocol session, and wherein the second point-to-point protocol session is associated with a service option for a low speed packet data call;
• performing a second handoff of the terminal while the new data call is active, wherein the second handoff is from the first base station to a second base station, wherein the first base station supports a first protocol revision and the second base station supports a second protocol revision that is later than the first protocol revision, wherein the first protocol revision supports the service option for the low-speed packet data call but does not support the service option for the high-speed packet data call, and wherein the second protocol revision supports the service option for the low-speed packet data call and the service option for the high-speed packet data call;
• purging the second point-to-point protocol session, wherein the purging is performed after the second handoff is performed;
• and
• reconnecting the first point-to-point protocol session for the new data call while the new data call is active, wherein the reconnecting is performed after the second handoff is performed.
