Stored Energy Dissipating Circuits and Methods for Switched Mode Power Supplies

A power supply, comprising:

• a rectifier component;
• an energy storage component;
• a first switch coupled between the rectifier component and the energy storage component;
• and a power dissipating circuit including a detector configured to detect a state of the power supply and to generate a control signal responsive to the state of the power supply, a dissipating component, and a second switch configured to controllably couple the dissipating component to the energy storage component in response to the control signal output by the detector.

A circuit, comprising:

• detection means for detecting a state of a power supply including an energy storage component and to generate a control signal responsive to the state of the power supply;
• a dissipating component;
• and
• switch means for controllably coupling the dissipating component to the energy storage component in response to the control signal output by the detection means.
