Abstract
Novel method and system for distributed database ray-tracing is presented, based on modular mapping of scene-data among processors. Its inherent properties include scattering data among processors for improved load balancing, and matching between geographical proximity in the scene with communication proximity between processors. High utilization is enabled by unique mechanism of cache sharing. The resulting improved performance enables deep level of ray tracing for real time applications.
Claims20
A method for creating computer generated images of objects, comprising:
- dividing 3D data for ray tracing into grid of cells;
- the grid comprises at least three skewed modules of data, the cells of each module are geographically adjacent only to cells of two other modules of data;
- mapping each module of data to different processor;
- an array of processors being linked to each other, such that each processor is adjacent only to two other processors;
- the neighborhood of processors is one-on-one correlated with geographical neighborhood of the modules of data.
2 more elements
A system for generating images by ray tracing, comprising:
- at least three processors for general inter-processor communication, the processors having a shared cache-memory based communication between each processor and two of its closest neighboring processors for data exchange between the said processor and its two adjacent processors;
- the processor receiving 3D ray tracing data from a set of data modules, such that every two geographically adjacent data modules can communicate within two neighboring processors by means of said shared cache-memory based communication.
