Abstract
The use of oxidatively transformed carotenoid or a component thereof to enhance the immune response in a subject for the treatment of infection or to enhance the immune response to an antigen in a subject being immunized. Also disclosed are pharmaceutical compositions and kits containing the oxidatively transformed carotenoid.
Claims39
A method of treating a subject having an infection, said method comprising administering to said subject oxidatively transformed carotenoid in an amount sufficient to treat said infection, wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is a mixture formed by reaction of 6 to 8 molar equivalents of oxygen with a carotenoid and contains a polymeric component.
A method of treating a human subject having, or at risk of, an infection, said method comprising administering to said subject oxidatively transformed carotenoid in an amount sufficient to treat said infection, wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is a mixture formed by reaction of 6 to 8 molar equivalents of oxygen with a carotenoid and contains a polymeric component.
A method of treating a subject having, or at risk of, an infection, said method comprising administering to said subject oxidatively transformed carotenoid in an amount sufficient to treat said infection wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is administered intravenously, ocularly, intramuscularly, topically, subcutaneously, or intranasally, and wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is a mixture formed by reaction of 6 to 8 molar equivalents of oxygen with a carotenoid and contains a polymeric component.

A method of enhancing the adaptive immune response to an antigen in a subject being immunized, said method comprising (i) administering to said subject an effective amount of oxidatively transformed carotenoid, wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is a mixture formed by reaction of 6 to 8 molar equivalents of oxygen with a carotenoid and contains a polymeric component, and (ii) administering to said subject an antigen, wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is administered prior to said antigen.
A method of enhancing the adaptive immune response to an antigen in a human subject being immunized, said method comprising administering to said subject an effective amount of oxidatively transformed carotenoid, wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is a mixture formed by reaction of 6 to 8 molar equivalents of oxygen with a carotenoid and contains a polymeric component.
A method of enhancing the adaptive immune response to an antigen in a subject being immunized, said method comprising administering to said subject an effective amount of oxidatively transformed carotenoid wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is administered intravenously, ocularly, intramuscularly, topically, subcutaneously, or intranasally, and wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is a mixture formed by reaction of 6 to 8 molar equivalents of oxygen with a carotenoid and contains a polymeric component.

A pharmaceutical composition comprising oxidatively transformed carotenoid and an antigen, wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is a mixture formed by reaction of 6 to 8 molar equivalents of oxygen with a carotenoid and contains a polymeric component.
A kit, comprising:
- (i) a pharmaceutical composition comprising oxidatively transformed carotenoid, wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is a mixture formed by reaction of 6 to 8 molar equivalents of oxygen with a carotenoid and contains a polymeric component;
- and
- (ii) instructions for administering said composition for the treatment of a subject having, or at risk of, an infection.
A kit, comprising:
- (i) a pharmaceutical composition comprising oxidatively transformed carotenoid, wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is a mixture formed by reaction of 6 to 8 molar equivalents of oxygen with a carotenoid and contains a polymeric component;
- (ii) a pharmaceutical composition comprising an antigen;
- and
- (iii) instructions for administering said oxidatively transformed carotenoid and said antigen for the immunization of a subject.
A toothpaste comprising oxidatively transformed carotenoid, wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is a mixture formed by reaction of 6 to 8 molar equivalents of oxygen with a carotenoid and contains a polymeric component.
A mouthwash comprising oxidatively transformed carotenoid, wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is a mixture formed by reaction of 6 to 8 molar equivalents of oxygen with a carotenoid and contains a polymeric component.
A pharmaceutical composition comprising oxidatively transformed carotenoid and formulated for administration to an eye, wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is a mixture formed by reaction of 6 to 8 molar equivalents of oxygen with a carotenoid and contains a polymeric component.
A method of enhancing immune response in a subject having an infection, said method comprising administering to said subject an effective amount of oxidatively transformed carotenoid, wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is a mixture formed by reaction of 6 to 8 molar equivalents of oxygen with a carotenoid and contains a polymeric component.
A method of enhancing immune response in a human subject having, or at risk of, an infection, said method comprising administering to said subject an effective amount of oxidatively transformed carotenoid, wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is a mixture formed by reaction of 6 to 8 molar equivalents of oxygen with a carotenoid and contains a polymeric component.
A method of enhancing immune response in a human subject having, or at risk of, an infection, said method comprising administering to said subject an effective amount of oxidatively transformed carotenoid, wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is administered intravenously, ocularly, intramuscularly, topically, subcutaneously, or intranasally, and wherein said oxidatively transformed carotenoid is a mixture formed by reaction of 6 to 8 molar equivalents of oxygen with a carotenoid and contains a polymeric component.
