Abstract
A wind tower system includes a number of wind tower system rotor blades formed with substantially clear composite fiber reinforced polymer (FRP), resin and hardener polymers, a nacelle made at least partially from composite FRP or a steel-based, a hub connecting the plurality of wind tower system rotor blades to the nacelle and a tower upon which the nacelle is connected. The wind tower system rotor blades are designed for minimizing wind turbulence and, therefore, sound during active wind tower system operation and freely transmit light to minimize blade light reflectivity and therefore visual presence and wherein the nacelle and tower are coated to reduce visual impact.
Claims21
A wind tower system, comprising:
- a plurality of wind tower system rotor blades comprising substantially clear composite fiber reinforced polymer (FRP), resin and hardener polymers;
- a nacelle made at least partially from composite FRP or a steel-based;
- a hub connecting the plurality of wind tower system rotor blades to the nacelle;
- and
- a tower upon which the nacelle is connected;
- wherein the wind tower system rotor blades include means for minimizing wind turbulence and, therefore, sound during active wind tower system operation and freely transmit light to minimize blade light reflectivity and therefore visual presence and wherein the nacelle and tower are coated to reduce visual impact.
A method of manufacturing a wind tower system a rotor blade, comprising:
- inserting a plurality of layers of resin-impregnated fibers in respective top and bottom upper and lower blade half shell molds configured such that when joined, the two blades form a trailing edge with a sound deadening fringe;
- injecting resin into the molds using vacuum infusion to render the rotor blades substantially light transmissive;
- thermo curing and pressure forming to create blade shape;
- further vacuum treating to purge the resin-impregnated fibers of any air to optimize clarity, strength and transparency;
- and
- heating to activate chemical processes to cure the resin and adjust RI.
