Abstract
The system utilizes a plurality of layers to provide a robust storage solution. One layer is the RAID engine that provides parity RAID protection, disk management and striping for the RAID sets. The second layer is called the virtualization layer and it separates the physical disks and storage capacity into virtual disks that mirror the drives that a target system requires. A third layer is a LUN (logical unit number) layer that is disposed between the virtual disks and the host. By using this approach, the system can be used to represent any number, size, or capacity of disks that a host system requires while using any configuration of physical RAID storage.
Claims13
A method for providing dynamically optimized configurations of storage comprising:
- coupling a plurality of virtual LUNs to a host system;
- coupling the plurality of virtual LUNs to a virtualization layer comprising virtual disks and a protocol for automatically determining the optimal configuration of of said virtual disks;
- coupling the virtualization layer to a physical storage system and,
- dynamically optimizing the configuration of said virtualization layer depending on parameters in a memory access request from said host system.
A system for providing dynamically optimized storage comprising:
- a plurality of virtual LUNs coupled to a host system;
- a virtualization layer comprising virtual memory coupled to the virtual LUNs and a protocol for automatically determining the optimal configuration of of said virtual storage depending on parameters in a memory access request from said host system;
- a physical storage system coupled to the virtualization layer.
A method for dynamically arranging configurations of a storage device comprising:
- coupling a plurality of virtual LUNs to a host system;
- coupling the plurality of virtual LUNs to a virtualization layer comprising virtual disks and a solution protocol for automatically arranging configuration of said virtual disks;
- coupling the virtualization layer to a physical storage system and,
- dynamically arranging the configuration of said virtualization layer depending on parameters in a memory access request from said host system.
A system for providing a storage array network that is automatically and dynamically configured for optimum file access comprising the following:
- a RAID array;
- a RAID engine coupled to said RAID array;
- a virtualization layer coupled to said RAID engine and comprising virtual disks;
- a LUN layer coupled to said virtualization layer;
- A host system coupled to said LUN laver;
- wherein said host system requests file access from said RAID array through said virtualization layer and said LUN layer and said virtualization layer automatically detects the optimum virtual disk configuration from said host system request and said virtualization layer automatically configures said virtual disks into said optimum configuration.
