Abstract
Reciprocating rasps for the surgical preparation of the bone prior to the implantation of a glenoid or acetabular component with complex geometry are disclosed. Surgical methods for the use of such reciprocating rasps are also disclosed.
Claims22
A reciprocating rasp surgical instrument for use in the surgical preparation of a glenoid of a patient prior to implantation of a glenoid prosthesis, the reciprocating rasp comprising:
- a shaft having a first end configured to be secured in a chuck of a reciprocating tool, and
- a cutting head secured to a second end of the shaft, the cutting head comprising (i) a cutting surface having a plurality of cutting teeth arranged in a geometry that corresponds with the geometry of the glenoid prosthesis, and (ii) a concave guide surface that is devoid of cutting teeth and configured to receive a guide pin inserted in the glenoid of the patient.
A method of surgically implanting a glenoid component into the glenoid of a patient, comprising:
- inserting a guide pin into the glenoid of the patient,
- advancing a reciprocating surgical rasp over the guide pin,
- reciprocating the surgical rasp so as to abrade bone tissue to form a cavity shaped to receive the glenoid component, and
- implanting the glenoid component in the cavity.
