A method of scavenging oxygen-radicals in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering an effective amount of a 3,4-hydrophenylalanine compound of formula (I) to the subject:
- wherein R1 represents hydrogen atom or an α-amino acid, a β-amino acid, or a γ-amino acid bound via an amide bond;
- R2 represents hydrogen atom or a group represented by the following formula (II):
- wherein R3 represents hydrogen atom an α-amino acid, a β-amino acid, or a γ-amino acid;
- R4 represents hydroxyl group an α-amino acid, a β-amino acid, or a γ-amino acid;
- and
- n represents 1 or 2;
- wherein if either R1 or R2 is hydrogen atom, the other is not a hydrogen atom,
- or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
