Abstract
This invention relates to a method of determining the presence of certain HLA alleles, such as HLA-B*1502 or HLA-B*5801, and a kit for carrying out this method. Also disclosed is a method for assessing whether a patient is at risk for developing adverse drug reactions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, or hypersensitivity syndrome) based on the presence or absence of a genetic marker (e.g., HLA-B*1502, HLA-B*5801, or HLA-B*4601).

A method of assessing a risk of a human patient for developing an adverse drug reaction in response to a drug, comprising
- detecting the presence of HLA-B*1502 in a sample obtained from the patient, and
- correlating the presence of HLA-B*1502 in the sample with an increased risk for an adverse drug reaction in the patient in response to oxcarbazepine, wherein the adverse drug reaction is Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis.
