Abstract
A blade includes a hollow metal airfoil having an opening to an internal cavity in a first major surface. A metal cover is adhesively bonded to a socket formed around the opening. The cover encloses the cavity and provides a continuous first major surface.
Claims20
A blade comprising:
- a root;
- an airfoil connected to the root and formed from a first metallic material having first and second major surfaces, an internal cavity with an opening in the first major surface, a socket around the opening, a cover received in the socket and covering the opening;
- and
- an adhesive bond between the cover and the socket.

A method for making a blade, the method comprising:
- forming an airfoil and a cover from a first metallic material;
- forming an opening, a socket, and a cavity in a first major surface of the airfoil;
- engaging the cover with the socket, enclosing the cavity within the airfoil;
- adhesively bonding the cover and the socket;
- and
- machining the airfoil into a final blade shape.
