Abstract
A magnet rotor assembly comprises a magnet sleeve held on a rotor shaft by a rigid adhesive layer that includes at least one axial wedge shape corresponding to an axial irregularity on at least one of the surfaces bonded by the adhesive layer. Improved crush strength in the magnet sleeve and in other bonded metal parts, both initially and after exposure to high temperatures is accomplished by impregnating the parts with a curable resin.
Claims36
An improved magnet rotor assembly comprising:
- a. a rotor shaft;
- b. a pre-formed magnet sleeve mounted on the rotor shaft;
- and
- c. a rigid adhesive layer connecting the rotor shaft and the magnet sleeve;
- wherein at least one of the rotor shaft and the magnet sleeve comprise at least one axial irregularity adapted to define an axial wedge shape in the adhesive layer.
The method for making an improved magnet rotor assembly comprising:
- a. providing a substantially cylindrical pre-formed magnet sleeve and a substantially cylindrical rotor shaft, wherein at least one of the magnet sleeve and the rotor shaft include at least one axial irregularity;
- b. applying a curable adhesive to at least one of the magnet sleeve and the rotor shaft;
- c. mounting the magnet sleeve on the rotor shaft and curing the adhesive so as to form a magnet rotor assembly wherein the at least one axial irregularity defines at least one axial wedge shape in the cured adhesive layer.
In a method for making a magnet rotor assembly comprising mounting a pre-formed magnet sleeve on a rotor shaft by means of a curable adhesive layer, the improvement comprising the additional step of impregnating the sleeve with a curable resin system whereby the undesirable introduction of air bubbles into the adhesive layer during curing of the adhesive layer is suppressed and whereby the physical strength of the magnet sleeve during high temperature use is increased.
A method for improving the crush strength of a bonded metal part comprising the steps of (1) providing a bonded metal part having a determinable crush strength, (2) impregnating the bonded metal part with a curable resin and (3) curing the resin whereby the crush strength of the part is increased above the determinable crush strength both initially and after extended exposure to temperatures of at least 160° C.
