Abstract
A method and an apparatus for rapidly resuming, at times of failures, network traffic in a connection-oriented network by using an alternative route pre-computed and stored locally in nodes along an initial route without requiring signaling of upstream nodes or a master server.

A method, comprising:
- receiving, at a first node of a network that includes a plurality of nodes, data that indicates a plurality of different routes through the network;
- storing, in a memory associated with the first node, the plurality of routes;
- forwarding, by the first node, first packets according to a first route, of the plurality of routes, where forwarding the first packets includes:
- forwarding the first packets to a second node, of the plurality of nodes, that is downstream of the first node;
- determining, by the first node, failure of the second node;
- and
- forwarding, by the first node and upon determining that the second node has failed, second packets according to a second route, of the plurality of routes, where the second route does not include the second node.

A non-transitory computer-readable memory device, comprising computer-readable instructions, which, when executed by a first node of a network that includes a plurality of nodes, cause the first node to implement a method comprising:
- receiving data that indicates a plurality of different routes through the network;
- storing the plurality of routes;
- forwarding first packets according to a first route, of the plurality of routes, where forwarding the first packets includes:
- forwarding the first packets to a second node, of the plurality of nodes, that is downstream of the first node;
- determining failure of the second node;
- forwarding, upon determining that the second node has failed, second packets according to a second route, of the plurality of routes, where the second route does not include the second node.

A method comprising:
- calculating, by a master node of a network, an initial route that includes a plurality of nodes associated with the network;
- determining, by the master node, whether a particular node, along the initial route, is capable of supporting an alternative route;
- calculating, by the master node and upon determining that the particular node is capable of supporting the alternative route, the alternative route,
- where the alternative route includes at least one node that is not included in the initial route;
- and
- providing, by the master node, the alternative route to the particular node.
