Abstract
A system and method for linking the account of a subscriber of a multi-channel video programming distributor (MVPD) network to an account of the subscriber on a social networking site and to receive invitations to follow a page or join a group hosted on a social networking site that is relevant to the video content being displayed on the subscriber's television.
Claims20
A system for presenting an invitation to follow content on a social media site comprising:
- a network, wherein the network is operated by a multi-channel video programming distributor (MVPD);
- a database, wherein the database comprises subscriber account information that associates a subscriber of the MVPD network to a set top box (STB) using an STB identifier;
- a headend connected to the MVPD network, wherein the headend comprises a first processor that is configured with software executable instructions to cause the headend to perform operations comprising:
- generating a click-to-follow application, wherein the click-to-follow application comprises the click-to-follow invitation and instructions executable by the STB;
- inserting the click-to-follow application into a data stream;
- and
- sending the data stream comprising the click-to-follow application to the STB of the subscriber via the MVPD network;
- the STB, wherein the STB comprises a second processor that is configured with software executable instructions to cause the STB to execute the click-to-follow application to perform operations comprising:
- presenting the invitation to the subscriber;
- determining whether the subscriber has accepted the invitation;
- and
- when the subscriber accepts the invitation, sending a query to a click-to-follow server;
- and
- the click-to-follow server, wherein the click-to-follow server comprises a third processor that is configured with software executable instructions to cause the click-to-follow server to perform operations comprising:
- receiving the query from the STB, wherein the query comprises the STB identifier;
- using the STB identifier to obtain the MVPD subscriber account data from the database;
- determining whether the subscriber account information comprises authentication information to access a subscriber account on the social networking site;
- when the subscriber account information comprises the authentication information, providing the social networking site the authentication information;
- accessing the subscriber's account on the social networking site;
- and
- associating the particular page on the social networking site with the subscriber's account on the social networking site.

A method for presenting an invitation to follow content on a social media site via a network operated by a multi-channel video programming distributor (MVPD), the method comprising;
- generating a click-to-follow application, wherein the click-to-follow application comprises the click-to-follow invitation and instructions executable by an STB;
- inserting the click-to-follow application into a data stream;
- and
- sending the data stream comprising the click-to-follow application to the STB of the subscriber via the MVPD network;
- operating the click-to-follow application on the STB;
- presenting the invitation to the subscriber;
- determining whether the subscriber has accepted the invitation;
- when the subscriber accepts the invitation, sending a query to a click-to-follow server, wherein the query comprises an STB identifier;
- and
- receiving at the click-to-follow server the query from the STB;
- using the STB identifier to obtain the MVPD subscriber account data from a database, wherein the database comprises subscriber account information that associates the subscriber of the MVPD network to the set top box (STB) using the STB identifier;
- determining whether the subscriber account information comprises authentication information for accessing a subscriber account on the social networking site;
- when the subscriber account information comprises the authentication information, providing the social networking site the authentication information;
- accessing the subscriber's account on the social networking site;
- and
- associating the particular page on the social networking site with the subscriber's account on the social networking site.
