Abstract
A dental device capable of monitoring at least one characteristic of the dental device. The characteristics are monitored by the use of microchips; radio frequency identification devices (RFID), bar codes, resistors, diodes, semiconductors, and magnetic strips.

A piezoelectric dental device comprising:
- a handpiece;
- an oscillating member located within said handpiece;
- a dental tip connectable to said handpiece and in communication with said oscillating member;
- and
- means for monitoring at least one characteristic of said dental device, said monitoring means located within said dental tip, handpiece, or base station.

A dental tip for use with a piezoelectric dental device, said dental tip comprising:
- means for monitoring at least one of the characteristics of said dental tip, said means located within said dental tip.
A piezoelectric dental device comprising:
- a base station for controlling the dental device;
- a handpiece in communication with said base station, said handpiece having an oscillating device located in said handpiece;
- a dental tip connectable to said handpiece and in communication with said oscillating device;
- and
- means for monitoring said characteristics of said dental device, said monitoring means being located within said dental tip, handpiece, or base station, said monitoring means capable of transmitting information to at least one of said base station and an external processing device.
