Abstract
The present invention provides a method of treating diseases or disorders benefiting from inactivating or down-regulating the activity of the capsaicin receptor in a mammal by inhibiting the activity of the capsaicin receptor. The present invention also provides a method of treating obesity and obesity-related diseases and disorders in a mammal by inhibiting the activity of the capsaicin receptor.

1-23. (canceled)
A method for treating an obesity-related disease or disorder in a mammal comprising:
- administering to the mammal a therapeutically-effective amount of a direct or indirect capsaicin receptor antagonist.
The method according to claim 1, wherein the capsaicin receptor antagonist is a direct capsaicin receptor antagonist.
The method according to claim 1, wherein the capsaicin receptor antagonist is an indirect capsaicin receptor antagonist.
The method according to claim 1, wherein the obesity-related disease or disorder is selected from the following:
- type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, insulin resistance, cancer and reproductive disorders.
The A method according to claim 1, wherein the obesity-related disease or disorder is type 2 diabetes.
The method according to claim 1, wherein the obesity related disease or disorder is type I diabetes.
The method according to claim 1, wherein the obesity-related disease or disorder is impaired glucose tolerance.
The method according to claim 1, wherein the obesity-related disease or disorder is cardiovascular disease.
The method according to claim 1, wherein the obesity-related disease or disorder is hypertension.
The method according to claim 1, wherein the obesity-related disease or disorder is cancer.
The method according to claim 10, wherein the cancer is colon cancer, rectal cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, uterine cancer, kidney cancer, endometrial cancer, gall bladder cancer, thyroid cancer, liver cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, stomach cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, or multiple myeloma.
The method according to claim 1, wherein the obesity-related disease or disorder is reproductive disorders.
The method according to claim 12, wherein the reproductive disorder is selected from:
- polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCO), infertility, and impotency or erectile dysfunction.
The method according to claim 1, wherein the direct or indirect capsaicin receptor antagonist is a natural product, synthetic organic compounds, peptide, protein, antibody, antibody fragment, single-chain antibody, or antibody-based construct.
The method according to claim 1, wherein the mammal is human.
The method according to claim 1, wherein the mammal is a domestic farm animal, a zoo animal, a sports animal, or companion animal.
