Method for extracting a carious lesion area

A method for extracting a lesion area from sound regions of a tooth, comprising:

• generating a digital image of the tooth comprising obtaining a fluorescence image of the tooth, obtaining a reflectance image of the tooth, and combining image data for the fluorescence and reflectance images;
• identifying one or more tooth regions by processing the digital image of the tooth;
• extracting one or more suspicious lesion areas from the digital image of the tooth;
• and
• identifying and removing one or more false positives from the one or more extracted suspicious lesion areas.

A method for extracting, from a digital image of a tooth, at least one lesion area from sound regions of a tooth, comprising:

• accessing a digital image of the tooth;
• identifying tooth regions from within the digital image of the tooth;
• extracting one or more suspicious lesion areas according to the identified tooth regions;
• and
• removing one or more false positives from the extracted one or more suspicious lesion areas.
