Power spectral distribution measurement to facilitate system acquisition

A device for receiving communication signals of at least one predetermined technology type, the device comprising:

• means for sequentially measuring a PSD of received signals in contiguous segments of a frequency band of interest;
• means for comparing at least one characteristic of the measured PSD to at least one predetermined metric to identify the presence or absence of at least one technology type of the received signals in locations across the band;
• and
• means for performing a system acquisition operation in accordance with the identification.

A method for use in a remote terminal in a wireless communications system, the remote terminal configured to receive communication signals of at least one technology, the method comprising:

• measuring a PSD of received signals within a frequency band of interest;
• comparing a plurality of characteristics of the measured PSD to a respective plurality of predetermined metrics to identify at least one technology type of the received signals in locations across the band;
• and
• performing a system acquisition operation in accordance with the identification.

A method for use in a remote terminal in a wireless communications system, the remote terminal configured to receive communication signals of at least one predetermined technology type, comprising:

• sequentially measuring a PSD of received signals in contiguous segments of a frequency band of interest;
• comparing at least one characteristic of the measured PSD to at least one predetermined metric to identify the presence or absence of at least one technology type of the received signals in locations across the band;
• and
• performing a system acquisition operation in accordance with the identification.

A computer program product including instructions for causing a remote terminal to:

• sequentially measure a PSD of received signals in the remote terminal in contiguous segments of a frequency band of interest;
• compare at least one characteristic of the measured PSD to at least one predetermined metric to identify the presence or absence at least one technology type of the received signals in locations across the band;
• and
• perform a system acquisition operation in accordance with the identification.
